Trastevere: Rome's Charming Neighborhood

Rome: The Eternal City has many iconic landmarks that people love. Ranging from the Trevi Fountain to Colosseum, there are a lot of places that we have read about in books and seen in hundreds of movies. However, there are places less known. One of my favorites is right across the Tiber River: Trastevere, which is no less than a gem.

This is a highly vibrant neighborhood, and it’s a great option if you are tired of the touristy stuff or you’d like to try some of the most unique restaurants in town.

Trastevere has colorful houses and cobblestone streets, so it’s old-school charm. It is a village with small alleys and buildings painted in bright colors. Overflowing flower boxes also hang from the windows, making it even more colorful and magical. So, if you want to enjoy the charm of this neighborhood, we are sharing some options!

Learn About the History

The Trastevere neighborhood in Rome has a rich history dating back to the city’s origins. Initially an Etruscan territory, it was occupied by Rome for strategic reasons but remained sparsely populated until the Republican era when workers, sailors, fishermen, and immigrants from the East settled there.

Emperor Augustus included Trastevere as the 14th region of Rome, but it was only fully incorporated into the city walls by Emperor Aurelian in the 3rd century AD. During the imperial period, many wealthy Romans built villas in Trastevere, and the remains of some can still be seen today. In the Middle Ages, Trastevere was characterized by narrow, winding streets and a stark contrast between the rich and poor inhabitants, with the Trasteverini forming a distinct.

What to visit in Trastevere: Rome's Charming Neighborhood

The area is home to several notable churches, such as the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere and the Church of Santa Cecilia, which are adorned with beautiful mosaics and artwork. Other attractions include the Villa Farnesina, a Renaissance villa with stunning frescoes, and the Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, a lively square that serves as the heart of the neighborhood.

  • Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere: This church is one of the oldest in Rome, with its foundations dating back to the 3rd century AD. The current structure was rebuilt in the 12th century and features a stunning golden mosaic facade depicting the Virgin Mary and Christ. Inside, you’ll find more intricate mosaics from the 12th and 13th centuries and a beautiful Cosmatesque floor. The church is known for its warm, inviting atmosphere and is a popular spot for weddings.
  • Church of Santa Cecilia: This church, dedicated to Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music, is a testament to her legacy. Built in the 5th century on the site of her former home, the church underwent renovations in the 18th century, resulting in a baroque-style interior. The sculpture of Saint Cecilia by Stefano Maderno, located beneath the main altar, is a poignant reminder of her martyrdom. The church’s courtyard and the museum in the former convent, showcasing the remains of ancient Roman houses, offer a glimpse into the area’s rich history.
  • Villa Farnesina is a magnificent Renaissance villa located in Trastevere, designed by Baldassare Peruzzi in the early 16th century. The villa is famous for its stunning frescoes, including works by renowned artists such as Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo, and Giulio Romano, which adorn the walls and ceilings of the villa’s rooms and depict mythological scenes, astrological symbols, and illusionistic architectural elements.
  • Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere is the heart of the Trastevere neighborhood, a lively square that is always bustling with locals and tourists alike, featuring a beautiful central fountain and surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and shops. The square takes its name from the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, which dominates one side of the piazza with its stunning golden mosaic facade and is a popular spot for people to gather, socialize, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of this charming Roman neighborhood.
