Let’s have Breakfast in Naples!
Chaotic, vibrant, but also fascinating and delicious – there are plenty of adjectives to describe Naples.
Today, we’re focusing on what matters most to me: food!
While we know a lot about pizza and other Neapolitan specialties, we might not have given the right importance to another crucial part of the daily routine – breakfast. In this regard, the city offers numerous options to start your day right, whether you’re a local heading to work or a tourist eager to explore everything Naples has to offer.
Let’s start with one of the entry points to the city, Piazza Garibaldi, home to Naples Central Station. In the area, you’ll find dozens of bars and cafes .
Just a short walk from Piazza Garibaldi, in via Vico Ferrovia, 1,you’ll find the only branch of Pasticceria Attanasio, where you can buy sfogliatelle (vying for the title of “best sfogliatella” in the city) and other traditional delights, always fresh and ready to eat.
Venturing into the historic center of Naples, you can reach Piazza San Domenico Maggiore along the lower decumanus and the street commonly known as Spaccanapoli.
Here stands the first, historic branch of Scaturchio, one of the city’s most famous pastry shops. Among the specialties for breakfast, you’ll find the “Babà Vesuvio” and the “Ministeriale,” two trademarked products, but the window also showcases various sweets, including curly and shortcrust sfogliatelle, babà, graffe, and tempting cakes.
Historic is the adjective that naturally accompanies Caffè Gambrinus, which opened in the mid-19th century and has hosted nobles, artists, royalty, and heads of state in its salons. Apart from the ambiance, having breakfast at Gambrinus means being able to taste a wide assortment of typical Neapolitan sweets, with original reinterpretations, accompanied by excellent coffee.
Speaking of coffee, it’s impossible not to mention another venue not far from Gambrinus, also on the beautiful Piazza Trieste e Trento (a stone’s throw from Piazza del Plebiscito and the Teatro San Carlo, making it another highly touristy area). We’re talking about Bar del Professore, “the original” (to distinguish it from other coffee professors or self-proclaimed ones found in other parts of the city).
Here, you can enjoy a coffee made to perfection in its classic version or in one of about 60 flavor variants. The most indulgent is the hazelnut iced coffee, a coffee cream enriched with the taste of hazelnut for a moment of pure pleasure.
Staying in the same area, near San Carlo and, more precisely via Santa Brigida few steps from Galleria Umberto I, you can also find a branch of Poppella pastry shop, which complements the historic one in Sanità where the now-famous snowflake was born. It has become an integral part of Neapolitan pastry and is perfect for a rich and abundant breakfast.
Going up Via Santa Brigida, you can reach Via Toledo and walk it for a while to get to Augustus, a historic name in Neapolitan dining, gastronomy, and pastry. The establishment operates continuously, with sweet and savory offerings that can surely satisfy every palate.
Established in 2012, Birdy’s Bakery has become the first American bakery in the capital of Campania and is now an essential destination for those dreaming of a flavorful American-style breakfast in Naples. It’s located in the heart of the Chiaia district, one of the city’s most glamorous areas, and is the ideal place for breakfast, brunch, lunch, tea, dinner, and late-night snacks. Among the most popular specialties are cheesecake, red velvet cake, pancakes, but also cheeseburgers and the classic “stars and stripes” breakfast with bacon, scrambled eggs, potato pancakes, and beans. So if you fell a bit nostalgic, you know where to go now!
Chalet Ciro established in 1952 has earned a prominent place in the “pantheon” of Neapolitan pastry.
Its graffe are among the city’s best, and its ice cream is delicious and well-prepared.
Indulge in the delectable pastries while enjoying a breakfast with a seaside view, complete with sights of the Castel dell’Ovo, Mount Vesuvius, and the Posillipo hillside. Here their Youtube video
